Dr. Tariq Awan is the medical director of the Arizona Bone, Joint and Sports Medicine Institute (AzBJSMC). He is an international expert in the treatment of musculoskeletal and sports medicine conditions. He brings his expertise and personalized care in treating high level athletes as a team physician for multiple professional and collegiate sports teams to patients of all ages and activity levels.
Dr. Awan treats multiple musculoskeletal conditions and sports injuries in adolescents and adults. He has a particular clinical interest in chronic muscle and tendon disorders, osteoarthritis, concussions, and osteoporosis. Dr. Awan is also an expert in the use of cell based therapy, platelet rich plasma and other biological therapies for the safe and effective treatment of musculoskeletal problems and acute sports injuries.
Prior to opening AzBJSMC, Dr. Awan was the head team physician for the Orlando Magic and served on the medical staff of the Detroit Pistons, Detroit Redwings, Detroit Tigers, and University of Michigan Wolverines.
Dr. Awan is also an active researcher, developing new therapies for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. He has directed several clinical trials and published numerous papers in prestigious scientific journals.
Dr. Awan is double board-certified in sports medicine and family medicine. He completed his medical school at the Chicago School of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University and his residency at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, where he served as Chief Resident. Following residency, Dr. Awan completed a sports medicine fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. In addition to his patient care and research, Dr. Awan frequently teaches other physicians in the use of cutting edge musculoskeletal and sports medicine techniques.
